Photos from working in the villages of Uttar Pradesh India

In the past 17 days I visited 10 different villages in Uttar Pradesh India.  Located along the Ganges plain in northern India near the Nepal border, the state is home to some of the poorest people in the world.  To put in perspective more people live on $1 per day in Uttar Pradesh than in the 25 poorest African nations combined.  Below are some my photos, and visit the full gallery for more.

Most of the homes I visited were 1, maybe 2 rooms. A few shelves, a weaved "bed" and maybe a light bulb or two.  The lucky ones, had mosquito nets to protect the families from malaria at night.  Note that when you start to develop a head cold and you are sitting in a village where the "fever" and the "maleria" are going around.  It never feels good.  But these people live in this enviroment everyday.

The biggest challenge in this area of India is sanitation.  Trash and animal manure is everywhere.

Manure has a critical role in life in these villages. It is used to clean the homes and as fuel.  Here is the manure drying in the sun for cooking later that week.

Water is life in the villages, and most of these villages were lucky and had wells in the town, with some even having them inside the home.

All of the villages have elected leaders.  Here I sit and talk with the male leaders, who typically gathered in a central area each evening.

Many of the kids were shy at first, but there are more kids than you could count.

Putting on a Juggling Show helps to open them up...

Then they let me in the marble game...

Candy always helps too..

Back in China for the first time in 3 years. We are losing world leadership in Duckboat Technology!

Since going to school in Shanghai in late 2007 the progress and the development was simply amazing. Shanty towns have been replaced by 50 story apartment complexes.  The roads, subways and the basic services have all improved drastically.  This country has made 10-15 years of progress in just fewer than 3.

Plus this must have been the best weather I have seen in China. All three cities I visited Qingdao, Shanghai, and Beijing had clear blue skies for the trip.  Something I rarely saw during my previous stay.

One last thing, the Chinese duckboat technology is way more advanced than that here in the United States.  As Americans we cannot live in a world that we do not lead the duckboat race

40K Miles in 23 Days - Japan Vacation Photos

Cincinnati - Raleigh, NC - Dallas, Tokyo, Nagano, Kyoto, Tokyo, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Cincinnati, Chicago, Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Shanghai, Beijing, Chicago, Cincinnati.

40 Thousand miles in 23 days is easy. It only takes the following trip: Cincinnati - Raleigh, NC - Dallas, Tokyo, Nagano, Kyoto, Tokyo, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Cincinnati, Chicago, Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Shanghai, Beijing, Chicago, Cincinnati.

17 flights, several Japanese Bullet Trains, and one boat.

Here are 10 random thoughts.

  1. Japan is super clean.  Even the side alley ways are cleaner than any streets we have in the U.S.
  2. Bicycle is the best way to get around both Tokyo and Kyoto.  Plus you don't even need to lock the bike up.  Just park it.
  3. 5 Vending Machines per block is great but underwear vending machines are a bit weird.
  4. The train system is the best in the world, and super easy to figure out.
  5. Best Sushi
  6. Best steaks in the world.  I have no idea what they do but the $10 steak in Kyoto was better than any steak I have ever had in the US.
  7. Never get in the way of 30 Japanese school girls and the Gucci store.
  8. Food is too pretty to eat at times.
  9. If you can put 50 buttons on something the Japanese will have 100.
  10. I never knew what I was missing until my toilet played music.
